At 11:57 p.m., firefighters responded to 11 Seymour Ave., an unoccupied residential building, Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said. The fire extended to two occupied residential buildings at 9 Seymour Ave. and 13 Seymour Ave, Miranda said.
A 2nd alarm, requesting additional units to the scene, was called at midnight, and a 3rd alarm, requesting even more units, was called at 12:04 a.m., Miranda said.
One fire captain and three firefighters were injured due to a partial building collapse in the rear of 11 Seymour Ave., Miranda said. Each was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, Miranda said.
The fire captain sustained face and back injuries an he remains hospitalized and is reportedly in stable condition, Miranda said. The three firefighters, two who each suffered arm injuries and one who suffered an ankle injury, have been released, Miranda said.
The fire was considered under control at 2:45 a.m., Miranda said. Fourteen families, with 19 adults and 11 children were displaced.
The cause and origin of this fire is under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit, Miranda said.
